O Come, O Come, Emmanuel – An Advent Solo for Tenor and Piano
Description
A new setting of the great Advent prayer, written as a calm, flowing solo for tenor and piano. The melody is entirely new, not the familiar plainchant tune, and is built to be remembered after one hearing.
The three stanzas follow the hymn’s journey from longing to hope:
O come, O come, Emmanuel: a quiet lament in D minor for Israel in exile.
O come, thou Dayspring: brighter, in the colour of F major. The gloomy clouds of night give way to a lifting flight of notes.
O come, Desire of nations: a closing prayer for the King of Peace in D major.
Each stanza is answered by the refrain “Rejoice! Rejoice!” The piano accompanies with gentle broken chords above the voice. It gives the singer every entry and echoes the ends of his phrases.
