The Organist’s Year
Fourteen original pieces for organ follow the church through its year: the waiting of Advent, carols at Christmas, the long road of the Magi, the wilderness of Lent and the palms and shadows of Holy Week. Then come the bells of Easter, the cloud of the Ascension, the wind and fire of Pentecost and the thanksgivings of autumn. A trumpet voluntary for weddings and an elegy for funerals complete the year. Two concert pieces, Ageless Sea and Nunc Dimittis, carry the music into the recital hall and the evening office.
The pieces are written in the tradition of the English voluntary. Forms are clear, the harmony is tonal and each piece runs four to six minutes, so they suit a prelude, offertory or postlude. They are practical for the working church organist and rewarding in recital.
